We went into Chronicle with high hopes following a whole bunch of excellent reviews from several sources, but unfortunately Chronicle didn’t completely work for us – that’s not to say it wasn’t good. The basic plot courtesy of IMDB: Whilst attending a party, three high school friends gain superpowers after making an incredible discovery underground. Soon, though, they find their lives spinning out of control and their bond tested as they embrace their darker sides. We really liked the story, the three lead actors Michael Jordan, Michael Kelly and Alex Russell are great and give good performances, the effects for a film costing just 15 millions dollars are excellent. Chronicle’s director Josh Trank manages the almost impossible to keep going with the found footage rules set out by the film. It was this constant need to have everything filmed by someone or in some cases CCTV that detracted a little from the movie and we wonder what sort of film Chronicle would have been if they’d ditched the found footage idea.
Perhaps we’re just suffering a case of found footage fatigue as clearly many people really enjoyed Chronicle. Despite the problems we had with the film it’s still entertaining and worth a watch.
